Location & Atmosphere

Paludan Bog & Café is Denmark’s oldest book café, which is located right next to the university library and very close to Nørreport Station in the old Jewish quarter of Copenhagen. It is one of the coziest cafés in the city with its many wooden bookshelves and little reading nooks that quickly allow you to feel at home. It also has space to sit outside, enjoy the sun when the weather is nice and admire the wonderful building of Københavns Universitet which is located right opposite the café. Since Paludan is located in the city center, you can easily go for a stroll on Strøget (5 min walk away) or sit by the canals on Gammel Strand (7 minutes walking) to enjoy the sundown after you enjoyed a coffee in the café.

Ordering & Drink options

You order at the bar where you a greeted by a lovely staff, and the food is then brought to your table as soon as it is ready. Coffee prices range between 20-40 DKK and you also have the option of some plant-based milks. Additionally, in case you are not too keen on coffee, there are other delicious drink options available such as smoothies (the mango smoothie is very nice!), lemonades or tea. You can take the drinks immediately after ordering as they are prepared right then and there.

Paludan has long opening hours which let students study for however long they like and the café’s menu offers a variety of great options such as sandwiches, soups and salads at reasonable prices. Keep in mind that portions are big and quite filling! Sandwiches, for example, are served with baked potatoes and some salad.

Waiting times

Mainly due to its unique atmosphere, the café is frequently visited by students to study as well as enjoy a cup of coffee and a piece of delicious cake. Due to its popularity it can sometimes be quite busy and it might be difficult to find a table at first but if you wait a few minutes you’ll most likely get a spot.

Reservations & Access

Also, it is worth mentioning that Paludan only accepts reservations for a minimum of 6 people via a contact form on their website (

The café is easily accessed by bike or via public transport as Nørreport Station is close by (approx. 5-7 min walking).

We hope you have a nice time, like we did and enjoy the bookish atmosphere!
